JOB DESCRIPTION – MUSIC DIRECTOR/CONDUCTOR

The Music Director/Conductor for the Southern Tier Symphony (STS) has the responsibility to select and conduct a program of classical and popular selections for symphonic musical performances with our part-time regional symphony orchestra. STS offers three subscription, series-concerts, which consist of a single program performed at two locations within one weekend. All performances are held within the southern tier of Western New York and McKean County in Pennsylvania. In addition, “Bach’s Lunch”, held on the Tuesday of Easter Holy Week, features a small chamber orchestra which performs a single program held at two sites: Olean, New York and Bradford, Pennsylvania.

 

The Music Director/Conductor will demonstrate strong musicianship, leadership, interpersonal and communications skills and be an ambassador for the orchestra in our region. The Music Director/Conductor will facilitate a positive working relationship with the musicians, board members, and staff of the STS.

 

Concert season tasks may include:

 

Board/Personnel:

Select musicians and replacements with assistance provided by the STS personnel manager.

Report to the board of directors, including contribution to board meeting discussions, as a non-voting member.

 

Concerts:

Develop a program that is appealing to our local audiences and is creative in collaboration with other regional talent with the goal of enhancing our audience base.

Direct rehearsals and performances.

Present ‘talks’ prior to or during performances to enlighten audiences about historic or musical nuances relating to program pieces.

Prepare and submit program notes for musical performance programs.

Provide biographical and musical background information for publicity purposes.

 

Community:

Attend symphony-related receptions and fundraising functions (based on availability).

Participate in public outreach and publicity efforts as requested by the board when feasible
